There’s something about aviation incident reports that are just so fascinating. This one especially when looked at through the lens of Bainbridge’s Ironies of Automation, too.

tbh i think keeping fahrenheit was one of the only sensible things the US has ever done. it's like what percent warm is it where zero percent equals Really Fucking Cold and one hundred percent equals Really Fucking Hot and if someone's like "it's 70% warm" then you just immediately know that it's on the warm side but not all the way to Really Fucking Hot. meanwhile if it reaches 100% warm in celsius your skin melts off

All I really want is for my MBP to recognize my monitors when waking up from sleep and not have me need to restart it every other day to do so.

I wonder if upgrading to the TS4 hub would fix the issue, but I’m not exactly keen on spending $400 on something that may not actually make it any better, if the problem is on the macOS side, sigh.

I was blown away when I saw this in a Max Gladstone book. So, so obvious in hindsight if there’s any sort of transformation magic in the world, but just something I’d never seen before.

@nat This was one of the most annoying things about Labs going remote - the oral+sync culture made disseminating information take way more hops than necessary. It was common to pull a PM into a pairing session, for example, but one of big differences is that when collocated, the entire rest of the team has the opportunity to opt-in to that communication when relevant. Not so much the case when remote. Also not a lot of habit/muscle memory to use the Slack team channel over going directly to Zoom.

Woah. I hit my first Y2K38 bug in real code, because it’s 15 “years” from now if you count a year as 366 days (ಠ_ಠ).

I finally broke down and got QMK compiled for the Keychron Q1 (which was more painful than it should've been). Just so I can do something useful with the Print Screen key.

Yup, that’s me, the exhausted developer.

Working on performance reviews and reminded how much career advancement boils down to your manager being willing to argue in a roomful of their peers that you deserve that raise or promotion.

If you can't picture your manager doing that then you can't outwork your way to a promo

Math is when you use numbers, except if you’re doing real math, which doesn’t use numbers, and poetry is when something rhymes, except if you’re doing real poetry, which doesn’t use rhymes

I wrote a small blog post exploring the data supporting (or not) a WaPost claim of a "move to Canada" search spike "after" Biden's election. https://rawdatastudies.com/2023/01/08/disaggregating-google-trends-data/
Looking at daily data, the spike occurred several days before the election was called for Biden and was tiny compared to the 2016 spike.

Possibly the most annoying UI trend of the last few years is websites changing from

[username] - [ password ] -> Login

to
