Finally got around to reading https://ludic.mataroa.blog/blog/what-precious-things-does-the-corporate-world-steal-from-us/ and it reminded me of the project that I probably enjoyed the least, where I actually got a fair amount of intellectual stimulation, though not because of the actual work, but because I wound up commuting early to skip traffic and spending an hour at the Starbucks near the client site just reading papers and whatnot. Weird. But I do miss having chunks of time that encouraged reading like that.

If I had to start a new series of tech books, I would call it "Shattering your dreams about X".

This would be books about the hard realities of doing X for when you realize all the hard topics of operating X on a daily basis are not covered by the "it's going to be sooooo easy" official docs.

Like:
- "Shattering your dreams about k8s",
- "Shattering your dreams about GitOps",
- "Shattering your dreams about the self-organized team",
- etc.

@swindsor Terminal.app was perfectly adequate for my usage until I ran into some issue w/my shell tooling, but I don’t remember what it was now.

@swindsor Honestly, I haven’t noticed much difference in terminal performance in general - I’ve had to switch due to functionality/bugs in the terminal.

If you leave it too long and the thing you’re jumping from has gotten intolerably, unusably bad, you’ll be in a hell of a panic and it’ll probably be at a super-inconvenient time. Give the New Thing a good sniff ahead of time and play around with it a bit in a non-vital setting, so that you’re not moving in a horrible panicked rush.

This certainly makes me feel less bad about haphazardly trying new things every now and then!

I wish I took better notes on why exactly I wound up on Kitty for my terminal. I used Terminal.app for many, many years until recently, but some terminal shenanigans eventually forced my hand to jump to Alacritty and now Kitty.

Pointed to this paper from a column on it: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4464593

Folks in dev psych and elsewhere often talk about girls being underconfident. But how rarely we frame in terms of boys' overconfidence.

"Across a range of countries, contexts, and domains, men have been found to exhibit higher degrees of confidence in their ability than women (Kay and Shipman, 2014). This phenomenon has been particularly salient in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)."

Another fun tale of debugging, this time with docker and signals and lots of nested commands: https://benchling.engineering/signals-shells-and-docker-an-onion-of-footguns-ee592e2b587b

I hate how whenever US liberals defend immigrants they have to say how hard working they are. I just want it to be known that I support immigrants who are just as lazy, if not even lazier, than me.

@inthehands to throw my 2 cents in: having "slack" or "breathing room" also can lead to situations where people start looking for, or just noticing outliers, and solving interesting but not urgent problems.

These problems would have become urgent if not spotted earlier, but slack lets them become non-threatning.

I have personally lost count of the amount of times I prevented a serious problem by having the luxury of reading logs leisurely for a little while longer.

@ifixcoinops "bad because it's actually just hard to make it good" vs "bad because a VP sold the users out to get a bigger yacht" is such a vibe

@ratkins I switched from Terminal.app to Alacritty and now to Kitty, but I don’t remember why exactly. I ran into some issues around terminfo, I think?

I went to the aquarium today and there was a guy in a wetsuit pushing a penguin around on a box, back and forth through the water

someone asked why and he says, "yeah, she kinda just really likes riding on the box"

This joke has probably been made a bunch of times, but...

Python 3.14, not to be confused with PyPI.
